Ohio Marijuana Supporters Turn in close to 700,000 signatures

COLUMBUS — Ohioans are one step closer to voting on whether to legalize marijuana for both medical and recreational use after the ResponsibleOhio campaign on Tuesday turned in petition signatures signed by more than 695,000 people but state lawmakers took last-minute steps to torpedo the campaign.

The Ohio Senate voted 20-9 late Tuesday to put a competing constitutional amendment on the November ballot that would prevent future groups from carving a “monopoly, oligopoly or cartel” into the Ohio Constitution. It also specifies that any proposed amendment on the November ballot that conflicts with this “no monopoly” provision and that deals with federally controlled Schedule I drugs — such as marijuana — “shall not take effect.” [Read more at the Dayton Daily News]
