N.J. legal weed is expensive, but consumers give dispensaries high marks, new poll finds

New Jersey’s rollout of recreational marijuana has been fraught with problems and delays, but that hasn’t deterred customers across the state who are willing to pay a premium for safe, quality weed.

About one-third of adults in the Garden State have used cannabis products since legal recreational marijuana made its historic debut last April, and most are happy to buy from a legal dispensary despite the high cost, according to a Stockton University poll released Tuesday.

Nearly half of cannabis users consumed weed for recreational purposes while only 13% used it strictly for medicinal reasons, according to the poll.

Among both recreational and medicinal users, 69% purchased from a licensed dispensary, and 86% of those said they were either satisfied or very satisfied with the experience, with most citing the safety and quality of the product as the main reasons.

But consumers pay a premium for weed purchased legally in the state. Students at the polling institute interviewed 660 adults, and a mere 7% said they approved of the price for legal weed in New Jersey, “which has among the most expensive cannabis in the country,” the institute said in a statement announcing its findings.

Thirty percent of cannabis users polled bought marijuana from non-licensed dealers, with 18% of those citing the high prices or taxes charged at legal dispensaries as the reason. The main reason given for buying weed on the street, however, was the lack of a legal dispensary nearby.
