GreensData: Cannabis Users Skew Younger, But Over 25% of 60+ Report Use

PRESS RELEASE

Moraga, CA: Today, GreensData, Inc., an industry leader in market research and consumer insights, has released the results of the Spring 2018 Cannabis Consumer Buying and Use Habits study.

Of all respondents, 43% reported using cannabis at least once in the last 12 months. Every day users accounted for 11% of all respondents and 25% of users. Every day users saw the largest share of the respondent base for cannabis users, followed by ‘a few times a week’ users and ‘less than once a month’ users (both at 10% of all respondents).

The every day user represents the most important customer to the cannabis industry. This user group saw the largest share of respondents reporting having spent more than $200 on their last dispensary trip (see full report for more on spend per trip).

Overall, users tended to be younger than non-users, according to survey respondents. 61.2% of respondents reporting at least one use occasion in the last 12 months were under the age of 45. By contrast, only 37.5% of non-users were under the age of 45.

Looking at use by age group, 62% of respondents aged 21-29 reported cannabis use in the last 12 months. The share of users decreases with each increase in age group, before a minimum of 26.7% of respondents over the age of 60 reporting cannabis use.

The study, conducted Feb. 16-22, 2018, asked over 1,200 people in the western U.S. about their cannabis use and purchasing habits and preferences. Respondents in California, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, and Colorado were asked about their use and purchase frequency, as well as, preference around type and method for cannabis consumption. The results of these questions were compared to demographic information for each respondent to build the demographic picture of typical cannabis consumers presented above.

The study also includes information on brand and dispensary awareness and recent purchases, cannabis categories purchased, dollars spent per trip, number of dispensary outlets visited, and notes on lost sales due to product unavailability.
