GPS is the first company in Colorado to receive both medical and retail transporter licenses under state law; licenses allow GPS to provide logistics, handle distribution, and store marijuana and marijuana products
Colorado transporter licenses are believed to be the first independent cannabis distribution licenses in the U.S.
DENVER, CO – Green Parcel Service (GPS) is pleased to announce that it has become the first company to be awarded both retail and medical marijuana transporter licenses under Colorado state law. Colorado recently created this new class of licenses, which allow independent companies to provide logistics, distribution, and storage services to retail and medical marijuana companies in the state. It is believed that these are the first state-issued licenses in the country allowing independent companies to provide pure transportation and distribution services for cannabis, without requiring the distributing company to purchase and resell the products.
This new license class is a major step forward for the cannabis industry in Colorado, as third party transporters were previously only able to deliver marijuana and marijuana products directly from one licensed entity to another. They did not have the ability to store marijuana or marijuana products. Allowing independent transporters to store marijuana and marijuana products will create significant efficiencies in the system and can remove the burden of logistics and distribution from cultivators and manufacturers.
Based on legislation passed in 2016 and subsequently signed into law, as of July 1, 2017, all independent retail and medical marijuana transporters are required to hold valid transporter licenses. (Retail and medical marijuana cultivators and manufacturers are not required to have transporter licenses to transport their own product.) Last week, GPS was awarded License #s 406-00001 for medical marijuana transport and 406R-00002 for retail marijuana transport.
“Since our launch in 2015, we have looked forward to providing true logistics services to retail and medical marijuana companies in Colorado,” said GPS CEO Pat Duddy. “That vision is now one step closer to becoming a reality. We intend to build upon the reputation we have developed as a trusted courier and distributor in order to expand our services into more advanced logistics. This is an exciting new advancement for the Colorado cannabis industry and we are excited to be leading this new wave of innovation.”
