San Francisco’s Unwritten “Rules” For Marijuana at Super Bowl 50

When the World Series last came to San Francisco, visiting sports reporters were gobsmacked at the City’s level of cannabis tolerance.

“Right over there, people are smoking weed!” reported NBC affiliate Newy Scruggs reported in 2010. “We are truly in San Francisco. … People are nice here.”

Yes, the national media love to depict the City as some dope-smoking babylon, though the reality is far more normal. For everyone visiting, here’s the basic rules of the game.

1) Don’t Get Busted In Public
Cannabis is still illegal, but mostly in name. About seven percent of Americans are past-month cannabis users — second only in popularity to alcohol. That equates to about 70,000 Super Bowl visitors either traveling with their stash, trying to re-up here, or taking a tolerance break. Meanwhile, an estimated one in 20 California adults report being a medical pot patient at least once in their life — that could be about 35,000 San Franciscans (medical; 58,000 recreational).
