Signatures for Florida Marijuana Amendment Sent For State Review

Collecting signatures is over: More than 1 million signatures in favor of legalizing medical marijuana in Florida have been sent for state review, Ben Pollara, campaign manager at United for Care, told Orlando Business Journal.

As of Jan. 11, all the signatures were sent to the Florida Supervisors of Elections, Pollara said, which counts the signatures to ensure they are valid. If someone signed twice, for example, one would be found invalid. Just 683,149 signatures need to be found valid in order for the effort to move forward.

What this means: Medical marijuana is one step closer to being back in the hands of Florida voters in November. Pollara said the Supervisors of Elections have 30 days as of Jan. 11 to review the signatures. If enough are validated, the medical marijuana effort will be assigned an amendment, which Pollara said is expected to be either amendment No. 1 or 2. If Florida voters favor legalizing a wider use of medical marijuana, industry experts predict the state market could grow to be worth $785 million. [Read more at the Orlando Business Journal]
