Sometimes, Things Aren’t Always What They Seem to Be

Editor’s Note: Last week, an email came across my desk that, I thought, would change the Cannabis Industry. Americanex, a Colorado based start-up that also lists offices in Florida and California, issued a press release that read….

As soon as I saw the email, I forwarded it to my colleague, John Hollon, a longtime veteran of the Human Resources B-to-B media (where ADP has been a leading HR supplier) and he confirmed that this indeed would be a big move. I proceeded to reach out to ADP for confirmation, and also called Americanex to schedule a meeting for Friday 1/23/15 to hear the details about their announcement. We received a response the following Friday from ADP that said…

Thanks Dave,

Dick,

We are working on a story here, this is big news for the Cannabis Industry if it is in fact true. CBE Press LLC and cbetotal.wpengine.com are launching our CBE Human Capital Management newsletter next Wednesday and would like to know if ADP is partnering with Americanex so we can let the industry know.

Thanks and look forward to hearing from you.

Hmmmm, no denial from ADP. However, Steve Janjic, CEO of Americanex, had failed to join CBE Press for a scheduled Friday meeting that I had set up directly with him via phone call after the original press release to hear the details of their announcement.

CBE Press followed-up the story one last time before publishing the news in the 1/27/15 issue of CBE Week.

This past Wednesday, CBE Press received the following email from ADP.

Importance: High

Rob,

ADP is requesting a correction to the story copied below my signature that recently appeared in your publication because it is not accurate.  ADP is not participating in a partnership with Amercanex to offer our services to the cannabis industry. The opportunity was presented to the company by a sales associate, but there is no interest in such a referral agreement.

We also need you to remove the ADP logo from your site as this is an unauthorized use of a copyrighted property. Permission to use our logo must be specifically granted in writing.

Thank you for your attention to these issues.

With ADP’s clear denial that it had no partnership arrangement with Americanex, CBE Press took the story down from www.cannabisbusinessexecutive.com and I called Steve Janjic at Americanex again for their comment. Steve answered my call on Friday Jan. 30, and, when confronted with ADP’s denial of any partnership, Janjic told me that the deal was signed by his COO ‘s office and that he would forward a copy of the agreement to CBE Press, if not by end of day Friday, by Monday morning 2/2 for our rescheduled conference call.

Needless to say, CBE Press hasn’t heard from Janjic or Americanex since as he once again stood CBE Press up.

So from the top, CBE Press would like to apologize for erroneously bringing attention to Americanex’s false claims of its partnership deal with ADP.
