Buyers of Pot-Themed .nyc Web Domain Betting on Legalization in New York

Bruce Pinker does not smoke pot, but he did just spend more than $60,000 on marijuana.

Dr. Pinker, a White Plains-based podiatrist, was the winner of a .nyc domain auction for the rights to marijuana.nyc, a prize he captured for the price of $60,920. While that fee was by far the highest paid at auction for a .nyc domain, Dr. Pinker sees his expensive purchase as a can’t miss investment in a state that he believes will inevitably legalize pot.

“When you look at how the state of Colorado is making $50 million in tax revenue from cannabis legalization, you’re also looking at a wide-open market for New York,” he said. “I’m not a proponent of people getting high, but this is like alcohol and Prohibition in the last century.”

Dr. Pinker’s professional experience with patients experiencing pain has also informed his stance on marijuana. He said that in addition to its overall medicinal properties, cannabis has applications in the treatment of seizures and chronic pain management. Taken as a whole, Dr. Pinker thinks that he is sitting on a Web address that will be in high demand in the not-too-distant future. [Read more at Crain’s New York Business]
