Former Uruguay President Vazquez wins again

Tabare VazqTabare Vazquezuez took this week’s presidential election in Uruguay, showing continued support for the leftist movement in a country that has legalized marijuana and is soon to have the first state-run pot marketplace in the world.

His being elected is being seen as a continuation of current Uruguay president, Jose Mujica. Both men are members of the Broad Front coalition, a group that has helped change human rights laws such as same-sex marriage, abortion and pot. Mujica’s popularity is thought to be a strong cause for this continuation of left power.

The 74-year-old oncologist took 53% of the vote while his National Party opponent Luis Lacalle Pou, son of ex-president Luis Alberto Lacalle Herrera, took 40%.

Lacalle Pou had a different approach to his campaign, vowing to undo the work Mujica and Vazquez have done in order to legalize marijuana and regulate it using the government.

However, his plan to change the system did not bode well for him during an era that has seen Uruguay’s economy on the rise. Many citizens are pleased with the change that has occurred over the past two decades and were not convinced that returning to a traditional party was a step forward.
