Philly To Decriminalize Marijuana Possession & Use

Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter and Councilman James Kenney announced a new city ordinance that will go into effect October 20, 2014, that will decriminalize the possession and use of small amounts of marijuana in the city.

Under the new ordinance, any person found to be in possession of 30 grams or less of marijuana will receive a Notice of Violation and up to a $25 fine. A person found to be using (smoking) a small amount of marijuana (30 grams or less) in public will receive a Notice of Violation and up to a $100 fine or up to nine hours of community service.

Chris Goldstein who represents the group Philly NORML, which has been working to reform marijuana laws, says that this new ordinance is also being touted as a civil rights victory. [Read More]
