Can you buy a state-sanctioned pot-growing operation?
Maybe. Maybe not. But in Illinois, when you need to get something done, it never hurts to throw a little cash around.
And that’s the tactic by a Chicago enterprise that wants to put a medical marijuana cultivation center in central Illinois — in Logan County.
Cresco Labs, based in a high-rise office in the Loop, has made a deal with four of Logan’s surrounding counties: Instead of attempting to lure cultivation centers of their own, they’ve signed letters of support for the Logan County effort. Those letters are now part of the Cresco pitch in seeking the state’s lucrative blessing.
Hmm. Buying support. Sound like the Chicago way? Is that a bad thing? You decide.
Each of 21 Illinois State Police districts will host a cultivation center. Though multiple state agencies are involved in the new endeavor — officially known as the Medical Cannabis Pilot Program — the Illinois Department of Agriculture will choose the cultivation sites and companies.
