Alaskans Watch Closely as Legal Pot Sales in Washington

Brandon Emmett, a proponent of Ballot Measure 2 and executive director of the Coalition for Responsible Cannabis Legislation, says he expects legalization in Washington to work in favor of legalizing Alaska’s pot. He anticipates that overall public opinion on whether cannabis should be taxed and regulated will become more positive.

“I think the more people that go down (to Washington) and they see a legitimate cannabis industry happening, where the sky is not falling, where police are able to spend their time focusing on violent criminals, and more tax revenue is coming into the state — I think it’s going to help the campaign quite a bit,” Emmett said.

But before Alaskans even head to the polls, and regardless of the outcome, opponents of Measure 2 say legal retail sales in Washington could lead to more illegal marijuana in Alaska.
